Professional Learning Opportunities for Teachers Interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

To receive PLU credits for workshops, teachers must bring a Prior Approval Form with them to the first meeting.

GIFT – Ga. Internships for Teachers – (Dates Vary but Calendar on Website)

A 4-7 weeks internship with research scientists for selected science, math, and engineering technology teachers.  5-10 PLU’s or 3 hrs. graduate credit offered.  Stipend: $728 a week – Housing available with some experiences.  INFORMATION SESSION – SATURDAY, APRIL 19; NESPAL BLDG. 10:00 am.

Audience:  Middle & High School.


Georgia Science & Technology Tour – (June 3-5 )

Join us on this traveling tour as we explore the science and technology found at the University of Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology.  A $35 registration fee made to the University of Georgia is required for application to be considered but all tour expenses, lodging and meals, are covered.  We will begin and end at the University of Georgia’s Tifton Campus, 10:00 a.m.  2 PLU’s awarded.  Audience:  Middle & High School.


BioFuels Workshops - (June 12-13)

For those who think renewable energy is a 70’s era topic or something destined to be a pipe dream, attending this workshop will prove to be an eye-opening experience. Teachers will not only receive information regarding the current state of bioenergy as well as developments on the horizon but will also learn how to make biofuels in their classroom.  1 PLU awarded.  Registration  Fee:  $25  10 am – 5 pm.

Audience:  Middle & High School.


Biotechnology Workshop – (July 22-25) 

DNA: Changing Genes and Solving Crimes.  From crime scenes investigations to manufactured drugs to the food we eat, biotechnology has an increasing impact on our world, and this workshop will expose you to it using hands-on activities and laboratory experiments.  Registration Fee:  $100    3 PLU’s. 

9 am – 5 pm.  Audience:  Middle & High School.


Addressing Energy Concepts in the GPS – (June 26-27)

Energy – both basic forms (electrical, radiant, mechanical, chemical) and also renewable technologies (solar panels, wind turbines, hydrogen fuel cells, biofuels).  Teachers will build understanding of GPS energy content (resources and conversions) and inquiry activities to improve lesson delivery and assist student learning.  $60 stipend.  1 PLU; 9 am -3 pm.  Audience: K-5
